annal nayyar reports DfE to scrutinise return of Section 28 policies in schools

The Department for Education (DfE) has vowed to investigate the sex-education policies of more than 40 schools, after campaigners revealed many were adopting statements similar to the infamous Section 28 regime.

Brought in by Margaret Thatcher’s Government in 1988 as a controversial addition to local government legislation, Section 28 stated that a local authority ‘shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality’.

Later repealed in 2000, the section also banned the promotion in local authority schools ‘of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship’
